Court Orders Detention Of Former AGF Malami, Son At Kuje Correctional Centre
The court fixed January 2, 2026, for the hearing and determination of the bail requests.
Abuja, Nigeria- A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday ordered the remand of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, his son, and one other defendant at the Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the hearing of their bail applications.
The court fixed January 2, 2026, for the hearing and determination of the bail requests.
Malami, his son, and the third defendant were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering, unlawful acquisition of assets, and conspiracy.
The former Attorney-General was present in court as the charges were read to the defendants on Tuesday. All three defendants pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
Following their arraignment, counsel to the defendants informed the court of their intention to file bail applications on their behalf. The trial judge, however, ordered that they be taken into custody and adjourned the matter to January 2, 2026, for the bail hearing.
Malami served as Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice from 2015 to 2023 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He was widely regarded as one of the most powerful and influential officials during Buhari’s eight-year tenure.
