Trigger-Happy-Police Inspector Opens Fire, Kills One, Injures Two In Cross River

Calabar, Cross River State– A police inspector, Effiong Bassey, allegedly went on a shooting rampage at the Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters in Cross River State, killing a woman and injuring two others.
It was gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, has left residents in shock.
According to the state police spokesperson, Ugbo Irene, Inspector Bassey had just returned from night duty at Ekondo Microfinance Bank when he began displaying erratic behavior.
“Instead of handing over his AK-47 rifle, he barricaded the station’s gate, preventing movement in and out.
Efforts to calm him down failed, and he suddenly opened fire, hitting three people,” Irene said.
One of the victims, 41-year-old Ijeoma Wilson Obot, was fatally wounded, while Charles Mkpang and another individual sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
Swift intervention by tactical police units led to Bassey’s arrest, and he is currently in custody as investigations continue.
Following the attack, the Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 6 and the state police management team visited the hospital to check on the injured victims.
The AIG also provided financial support for their treatment and assured the public that justice would be served.
