Defence Minister Badaru Abubakar Resigns Suddenly On Health Grounds As Tinubu Declares National Security Emergency
President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation
Abuja, Nigeria– Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health challenges, the Presidency announced on Monday.
Badaru, 63, tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed the development in an official statement.
According to the statement, President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude to the former minister for his service to the nation.
“President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation,” Onanuga said.
The Presidency also hinted that a replacement may be announced soon. “President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week,” the statement noted.
Badaru Abubakar, a former two-term governor of Jigawa State (2015–2023), was appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023. His exit comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the administration.
The resignation follows President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, a move expected to usher in sweeping reforms in the security architecture.
