BREAKING: Sowore Meets Jonathan In Abuja, Seeks Urgent Intervention For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

Sowore revealed that Jonathan acknowledged the urgent need to address the issue decisively and fairly in the interest of national unity and healing.

Abuja,  Nigeria– Nigerian human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, on Friday met with former President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

According to a statement shared on Sowore’s social media page, the meeting focused on finding a just and peaceful resolution to Kanu’s incarceration.

Sowore revealed that Jonathan acknowledged the urgent need to address the issue decisively and fairly in the interest of national unity and healing.

He said President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly.

Sowore stated that Jonathan particularly assuring was that he promised to meet Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss this issue as soon as possible.

Sowore described Kanu’s continued detention as politically motivated, arguing that the IPOB leader had only sought to confront the long-standing issue of marginalization in Nigeria.

The Sahara Reporters publisher further urged political, cultural, and religious leaders across Nigeria—particularly from the South East—to unite in demanding Kanu’s release.

He reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful mobilization and advocacy for Kanu’s release, concluding his message with the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow.

According to the former presidential candidate,  “Earlier today in Abuja, I met with former President Goodluck Jonathan to discuss the continued incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. I thank him sincerely for recognizing the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing. Particularly assuring was that he promised to meet Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to discuss this issue as soon as possible.

“With this, former President Jonathan joins a growing list of Nigerians who have called for justice in Nnamdi Kanu’s case, a list that already includes ex Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Femi Falana SAN, Senator Shehu Sani, and many others across political and regional divides.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains in detention today because he took up the just cause of confronting the long-standing issue of marginalization in Nigeria. Like other ethnic and regional activists whose politically motivated cases have been withdrawn or dismissed, Nnamdi Kanu should also be released without further delay.

“Nnamdi Kanu should be set free. And I remain firmly committed to peacefully mobilizing for justice and freedom in this matter,” he added.
