Tinubu Insists New Tax Laws Will Take Effect January 1, 2026, Dismisses Calls For Review

The President urged all stakeholders to rally behind the implementation phase, which he said has now entered the delivery stage.

Abuja, Nigeria– President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has insisted that Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws will be implemented as scheduled, with full commencement set for January 1, 2026, despite growing public debate and concerns over some provisions.

In a State House press statement released on Tuesday, the Presidency said the tax reforms — some of which already took effect on June 26, 2025 — remain on course and will not be suspended or altered outside due process.

According to the statement attributed to President Tinubu, the reforms represent a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to lay what he described as a fair, competitive and resilient fiscal foundation for the country.

“The new tax laws are not designed to raise taxes,” Tinubu said, adding that the reforms are aimed at a “structural reset” of Nigeria’s tax system, harmonisation of existing frameworks, and the protection of citizens’ dignity while strengthening the social contract between the government and the people.

The President urged all stakeholders to rally behind the implementation phase, which he said has now entered the delivery stage.

The statement comes amid sustained public discourse and criticism over alleged changes and potential burdens embedded in the recently enacted tax laws, with some groups calling for a pause or review.

However, Tinubu dismissed such calls, saying no substantial issue has been identified that would justify disrupting the reform process.

“No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process,” the statement read.

“Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures.”

The President also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to due process and the sanctity of laws already passed, pledging collaboration with the National Assembly to swiftly address any genuine concerns that may arise during implementation.

Tinubu further assured Nigerians that his government would continue to act in what it described as the overriding public interest, insisting that the goal remains a tax system that promotes prosperity and shared responsibility.

“I emphasise our administration’s unwavering commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws. The Presidency pledges to work with the National Assembly to ensure the swift resolution of any issue identified.

“I assure all Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that supports prosperity and shared responsibility,” he added.
