Yoruba Union Gives Adeleke Seven-Day Ultimatum Over Killing Of Akinlalu Residents By Amotekun Operatives, Says He Risks Second Term
The commander falsely presented the victims as armed bandits, despite evidence showing they were innocent civilians who were attacked inside their compound.
Ikeja, Lagos State- The Yoruba Union, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá, has issued seven-day ultimatum to Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, demanding immediate action against members of the Amotekun Corps accused of killing three members of the same family and injuring several others in Akinlalu community, Ife North Local Government Area.
The group insisted that the governor must identify, arrest, and prosecute the operatives responsible, while also suspending the Osun State Amotekun commander for allegedly attempting to cover up the crime.
According to the union, the commander falsely presented the victims as armed bandits, despite evidence showing they were innocent civilians who were attacked inside their compound.
In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Convener, Olusola Badero, through the Home Director, Princess Balogun, the union condemned what it described as an “unprovoked massacre” carried out by security operatives who were established to protect Yoruba communities against criminal elements.
The statement read, “The victims were not criminals, neither were they caught with any weapons or incriminating items. They were chased into their homes, shot at close range, and left to die in their compound. Shockingly, the Amotekun operatives later returned, opened fire on those who came to rescue the injured, and carried away the corpses while labeling them as bandits. This is not only barbaric but also a complete betrayal of public trust.
The group warned that if Governor Adeleke failed to take decisive action within seven days, he should forget about his second-term ambition, particularly in Yorubaland where the memory of the killings will not be erased easily.
“We are a people of peace and law-abiding citizens. But we cannot continue to fold our arms and watch our people killed like animals by those empowered to defend them. Governor Adeleke must demonstrate leadership by bringing the killers to justice and suspending the commander who orchestrated a false narrative to shield his men from accountability,” the union said.
The Yoruba Union further accused the governor of indifference, saying that since the killings occurred, he had not ordered any investigation or arrest.
“This shows insensitivity and disregard for human life. Our people are mourning, yet their cries for justice have been met with silence.”
In addition to the arrest and prosecution of the Amotekun operatives, the group demanded that adequate compensation be paid to the families of the victims.
“We know that no amount of money can restore the lives lost, but it will help ease the agony and demonstrate that the government recognises its responsibility to protect citizens,” the union stressed.
The group also raised concerns about the integrity of the Amotekun Corps in Osun State, warning that if such extrajudicial killings are not checked, more communities may fall victim.
“If Amotekun, a security outfit created to shield our people from marauding herders and bandits, now turns its guns on innocent civilians, then what is the fate of the ordinary Yoruba man in his own homeland?”
However, Ìgbìnmó Májékóbájé Ilé-Yorùbá vow to pursue legal actions both locally and internationally if justice is not served.
“We will not allow this case to be buried. We will mobilize our people in Yorubaland and in the diaspora to ensure that the truth prevails and that the victims do not die in vain. If Governor Adeleke refuses to act, history will remember him as a leader who failed to protect his people,” the Yoruba Union added.
