World Press Freedom Day: Journalism Under Digital Siege-Otitolaye
We must work collectively to reverse these odds and trends; locally, regionally; and globally
The Publish What You Pay (PWYP), has extended their solidarity greetings to the media on the remarkable day of press freedom all over the world.
According to the group, “we identify with our partners in this journey for a free, just society where the freedom of speech and expression is guaranteed for the media and the whole of humanity.”
The year’s theme, “Journalism under digital siege” is appropriate and timely because attacks on journalists, the media and Civil Society at large is increasing day by day.

In a statement by the National Coordinator, Comr Taiwo Otitolaye said Civic Spaces in Nigeria and the world over is fast shrinking.
“We must work collectively to reverse these odds and trends; locally, regionally; and globally.”
He further explained that in order to achieve world press freedom, it is important that we address Political capture by corporations, extractives sector operators, governments, and their auxiliary agents working to repress the media through surveillance, digital controls, and other obnoxious regulations, and physical attacks.

These primitive pathways are to take full control of the people’s natural resources.
According to him “it’s a global pattern and conspiracies against the common masses and the entire citizenry. We must rise up in unison to these challenges.”
“We equally enjoin the media to continue to be proactive and collaborative in our collective fight for contract transparency, and disclosures of payments to governments because these are the underlining reasons for wanting to repress the media to gauge free speeches, whistleblowers and information dissemination around the world.”

However, he said the media as the watchdog of the society, must be at the frontiers of our Campaign for climate actions and Clean Energy Transition (CET). The need to begin the transition from fossils is now!
He salutes the media, journalists and activists for their resilience, doggedness and pro-activeness as the conscience of the people.
