‘Teachers Are Not Janitors’: Outrage As KWASUBEB Chairman Adaramaja Forces Teachers To Sweep School Compound In Front Of Students

The teachers, who reportedly tried to explain that the students had just returned from their break time, were ignored

Ilorin, Kwara State– Teachers at the Government Day Secondary School, Amule, Ilorin, were left humiliated on Monday after the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWASUBEB), Professor Raheem Adaramaja, allegedly forced them — including the Vice Principal — to sweep the school premises during an inspection visit.

Afrika Eyes learned that Adaramaja, acting on the directive of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, accused the teachers of maintaining an unkempt environment and ordered them to pick up litter across the school compound.

The teachers, who reportedly tried to explain that the students had just returned from their break time, were ignored as Adaramaja insisted they clean the premises in the presence of students.

Witnesses described the incident as “humiliating and demeaning,” saying the Chairman’s action stripped the educators of their dignity.

“He treated them like labourers, not professionals,” one source said.

Adaramaja, who is himself a professor and a former teacher, has come under fire for his alleged highhandedness and for publicly shaming teachers instead of motivating them.

Reacting to the incident, the Ilorin East Branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) condemned Adaramaja’s conduct in a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Saka Saafi O. Adanla.

“The humiliation and disrespect meted out to our members by the SUBEB Chairman is totally unacceptable and uncalled for,” the statement read.

“Teachers are not janitors. We condemn this behaviour in the strongest terms and demand an apology from the SUBEB Chairman.”
