Rivers Assembly Insists Impeachment Of Gov. Fubara, Deputy Is On Course, Dismisses Claims Of Suspension

The Assembly said the impeachment process, which commenced on Thursday, January 8, 2026, remains fully on course and has not been discontinued or suspended as being alleged in some quarters.

Port Harcourt, Rivers State — The Rivers State House of Assembly has firmly dismissed reports suggesting that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalaye Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, has been halted, insisting that the procedure is progressing strictly in line with constitutional provisions.

In a statement released on Friday, the Assembly said the impeachment process, which commenced on Thursday, January 8, 2026, remains fully on course and has not been discontinued or suspended as being alleged in some quarters.

The statement was signed by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Hon. Dr. Enemi Alabo George.

According to the statement, the impeachment proceedings were initiated pursuant to Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), following allegations of gross misconduct leveled against both the Governor and the Deputy Governor.

The House disclosed that two separate notices of allegations of gross misconduct have already been formally forwarded to Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Odu by the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The lawmakers noted that they are currently awaiting official responses from the affected executives, as required by law.

“The Rivers State House of Assembly is pleased to inform the good people of Rivers State that the impeachment process commenced by the House on Thursday 8th January 2026 is fully on course in line with relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” the statement read.

Reaffirming its constitutional mandate, the Assembly emphasized that it remains duty-bound to act in the interest of the people and safeguard the Constitution against any form of infraction by the Governor, Deputy Governor, or any other officer of the Rivers State Government.

“As we all know, it is the House of Assembly that is empowered by the Constitution to stand by the people and stop infractions on the Constitution by the Governor, Deputy Governor or any other officer of the Rivers State Government,” the statement added.

George, who also addressed what he described as deliberate attempts by certain individuals and media platforms to mislead the public.

George said the Assembly was aware of “false narratives” being circulated to suggest that the impeachment process had been stalled, warning that such misinformation was aimed at creating disaffection between the House and well-meaning Nigerians.

“We are aware that certain persons and media platforms are at it again to misinform the public, particularly to the effect that the process has been halted or discontinued. Some are trending false narratives to cause disaffection between the House and well-meaning Nigerians,” he said.

Speaking with the leave of the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, DSSRS, Dr. George urged members of the public to disregard what he described as the “antics” of those behind the reports, stressing that their efforts had already failed.

“I call on all and sundry to disregard their antics, as their actions have already failed. We remain committed to our constitutional duties and would not be dissuaded by cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not mean well for our country’s nascent democracy,” the statement declared.

The House of Assembly also expressed appreciation to the people of Rivers State for their continued prayers and encouragement amid the unfolding political developments. Lawmakers further thanked stakeholders and leaders at all levels for their support.

However, the Assembly extended warm regards to democrats across the country who believe in the Nigerian project, reaffirming its resolve to carry out its legislative and oversight responsibilities without fear or favor.

“Finally, we thank the good people of Rivers State for their prayers and encouragement and express our gratitude to all stakeholders and leaders at all levels, and use this medium to extend our warm regards to all democrats who believe in the Nigerian project,” he added.
