Police Storm PDP Headquarters As Factional Secretaries Resume Amid Tensions
Police officers were deployed to the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters to forestall potential clashes as Samuel Anyanwu and Ude Okoye both arrived to resume work.
Abuja, Nigeria – A tense atmosphere enveloped the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday as rival claims to the position of National Secretary sparked heightened security and political drama.
Police officers were deployed to the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters to forestall potential clashes as Samuel Anyanwu and Ude Okoye both arrived to resume work.
This follows the Court of Appeal’s ruling affirming Okoye as the authentic National Secretary, a decision Anyanwu has since appealed at the Supreme Court.
Supporters of both camps gathered outside the secretariat early Monday morning, chanting slogans and displaying solidarity.
Inside, Anyanwu, who drove into the premises to loud cheers, held a brief prayer session before addressing journalists.
“I have appealed the judgment at the Supreme Court, and I remain committed to serving this party,” Anyanwu stated.
He dismissed the PDP National Publicity Secretary’s earlier recognition of Okoye as a personal opinion rather than an official party position.
The crisis stems from Anyanwu’s decision to vacate the office to contest the Imo State governorship election, which he lost.
In his absence, Okoye assumed the role, later challenging Anyanwu’s attempt to reclaim the office.
The PDP National Working Committee (NWC) recently declared support for Okoye in line with the appellate court’s judgment, emphasising the party’s respect for judicial decisions.
Tensions remain high as both factions dig in, raising concerns about unity within the PDP ahead of critical political engagements.
Meanwhile, the police presence at the secretariat continues as party leaders scramble for a resolution to avoid escalating the crisis.
