Nine Dead In Jigawa Farmers-Herders Clash, Police Confirm
The clashes escalated after an initial dispute that claimed one life.
Dutse, Jigawa State- The Jigawa Police Command has confirmed the death of nine people following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Gululu, a community in Miga Local Government Area of the state.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer, Lawan Adam, disclosed that the clashes escalated after an initial dispute that claimed one life.
Adam explained that the conflict quickly spiraled, with villagers reportedly mobilizing to attack Fulani settlements, setting houses ablaze in Miga and Jahun Local Government Areas.
“Nine bodies were recovered from the scene by a police team deployed to quell the crisis. The corpses were transported to Jahun and Miga hospitals, where they were confirmed dead,” Adam said.
The statement read, “Upon receipt of the report, a team of police officers from the Miga and Jahun Divisions rushed to the scene to assess the situation and restore peace and order.
“Unfortunately, nine (9) bodies were recovered. The corpses were ferried to Jahun and Miga Hospitals, where the medical doctor on duty confirmed their deaths.
Adam explained that the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Abdullah has deployed officers to the communities to quell the crisis in addition to summoning a stakeholders’ meeting attended by the House of Assembly Speaker and leaders of the feuding communities.
“A stakeholder meeting was immediately convened, attended by the Jigawa State speaker, Haruna Aliyu, chairmen of the two LGAs, district heads, Miyetti Allah leadership, and vigilantes.
He noted that the meeting was centred on maintaining law and order, avoiding violence, propaganda, and reprisal attacks.
“In the meantime, patrols are being stepped up in the general area to prevent further breakdown of law and order. The situation has been brought under control. An investigation is currently underway to bring the perpetrators to justice”, Adam added.
