Gov AbdulRazaq Suspends Kwarapoly Rector, Sets Up Panel To Probe Students’ Protest
The governor also approved the constitution of a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the protest and the conduct of the polytechnic’s management.
Ilorin, Kwara State– Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has suspended the Rector of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, Engr. Dr. Abdul Jimoh Mohammed, following a recent students’ protest that disrupted academic activities at the institution.
The governor also approved the constitution of a three-member committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the protest and the conduct of the polytechnic’s management.
The decision was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu.
According to the statement, the investigative committee is chaired by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Senior Ibrahim Sulyman.
Other members are the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Nafisat Buge, and the Permanent Secretary, Service Welfare, Dr. Mrs. Mercy Olufunke Shittu.
The committee has been given a two-week deadline to submit its report to the governor.
Its mandate includes examining both the immediate and remote causes of the students’ protest, as well as assessing how the situation was managed by the leadership of the institution.
It is also expected to make recommendations aimed at preventing a recurrence of similar incidents and to propose measures that would promote stability, growth and improved administration at the polytechnic.
As part of immediate steps taken by the government, Governor AbdulRazaq directed the Rector to step aside from office with immediate effect, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The governor further approved that the most senior Deputy Rector should assume leadership of the institution in an acting capacity until further notice.
The statement added that the committee would engage relevant stakeholders during the course of its assignment to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation.
