Lagos Assembly Rejects Obasa’s Leadership Stance, Labels Allegations Of Thuggery

The position of the House remains the same, and nothing has changed. The position being canvassed by former speaker, Rt Hon Obasa, is uncalled for and unparliamentary.

Ikeja, Lagos State– The Lagos State House of Assembly has denounced recent remarks and alleged conduct by its impeached speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, describing them as “unparliamentary” and out of line with the Assembly’s standards.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, reaffirmed the Assembly’s decision to impeach Obasa, asserting that it was valid and supported by the majority of lawmakers.

“As elected representatives of the people of Lagos, we owe them good governance and harmonious relationship with other arms of government,” Ogundipe said.

“The position of the House remains the same, and nothing has changed. The position being canvassed by former speaker, Rt Hon Obasa, is uncalled for and unparliamentary.”

The former speaker, addressing supporters at a reception in Ikeja on Saturday, questioned the process of his impeachment and claimed he remains the legitimate principal officer of the House.

“I strongly believe I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way, and I will not contest it,” Obasa stated.

In response,  Ogundipe explained that the decision to impeach  Obasa was supported by over two-thirds of the Assembly members, stating their right to make such a move.

“The majority of the lawmakers who originally elected him as speaker also have the inalienable right to impeach him if necessary,” Ogundipe explained.

The Assembly’s statement comes amid heightened tension following Obasa’s impeachment, with some reports of alleged intimidation tactics surfacing.

The lawmakers maintained their stance that the leadership change aligns with legislative processes and the Assembly’s commitment to upholding parliamentary integrity.

The statement read, “It is imperative to clarify that over 2/3 of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are solidly united behind the new speaker, Rt Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

“Therefore, we stood by the decision taken on the 13th of January, where Rt Hon Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was impeached, and we shall defend our positions to the latter,” he said.

“I, therefore, appeal to the former speaker to toe the line of peace and harmony as being followed by others, as the current intransigent posture will heat up the polity and not augur well.

“Any attempt to heat up the polity will be resisted by the majority of distinguished members who unanimously elected Rt Hon Meranda,” Ogundipe added.
