Communities across Kwara State have faced increasing insecurity in recent months, with bandits terrorising areas in both the northern and southern parts of the state.

On August 11,2025, Afrika Eyes reported that gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted a woman, her one-year-old child, and another resident in Gbale, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.

According to the source, “The attack comes amid a series of recent abductions in Edu Local Government Area. Just a day earlier, the kidnapped children of a Lafiagi Point-of-Sale operator were released after their family reportedly paid millions of naira in ransom.

“Similarly, a couple, Mallam Manko and his wife Rakiya, who were abducted in Ekko village near Lafiagi, regained their freedom on Sunday.”

Residents say the frequency of such attacks has left communities in the area gripped by fear, with calls growing for urgent government intervention.

A source told Afrika Eyes that the community was thrown into panic last week Friday when gunmen suspected to be bandits stormed the area.

According to local sources, the attack occurred while members of the community’s vigilante group had gathered for a routine meeting.

The heavily armed assailants were said to have opened fire indiscriminately, forcing residents to flee into the surrounding bushes for safety.

A community source told Afrika Eyes that the exact number of those killed or kidnapped remains unclear as many people are still missing and fear has gripped the area.

“The situation was chaotic. People ran in different directions. Some may still be hiding in the bush. We saw two dead bodies — a police officer and another man. The bandits took advantage of the confusion to kidnap people, but we cannot confirm how many yet,” the source said.

A disturbing video obtained by Afrika Eyes shows the lifeless bodies of the police officer and the civilian lying in pools of blood, with signs of gunshot wounds.

The presence of the slain officer has raised concerns about the rising boldness of the attackers and their willingness to directly confront security personnel.

Residents say this is not the first time the area has experienced violent incursions from suspected bandits, but Friday’s incident has left many terrified.

Shops have been closed, streets are deserted, and fear hangs heavy over the community.
