BREAKING: Kwara Judiciary Workers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Salary Structure, Welfare Demands

They noted that for 15 years their salaries have remained stagnant despite prevailing economic realities.

Ilorin,  Kwara State– The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Kwara State chapter, has declared an indefinite strike over the state government’s failure to implement the Consolidated Judicial Salary Structure (CONJUSS) and review salaries and allowances for judiciary workers.

In a statement issued on Monday, signed by the union’s Public Relations Officer, Aliu Ahmad Gold, obtained by Afrika Eyes, JUSUN said it resorted to the industrial action after exhausting all avenues for dialogue and negotiation without any positive response from the state government.

The union lamented that despite multiple letters, including a 21-day strike notice served between July 25 and August 18, 2025, followed by a seven-day notice between August 18 and August 25, the state government failed to address its demands.

The union core demand is the immediate implementation of CONJUSS and a review of salaries and allowances for judiciary workers, last done in 2010 under the administration of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

They noted that for 15 years their salaries have remained stagnant despite prevailing economic realities.

JUSUN expressed concern over what it described as unequal treatment among government arms, stressing that while judges and senior judicial officers enjoy better welfare packages, judiciary staff — the backbone of the justice system — continue to be sidelined.

The union insisted that the implementation of CONJUSS was “non-negotiable” and vowed not to suspend the strike until its demands were met. It urged members to remain at home until further directives are issued.

The statement read, “We, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Kwara State Chapter, regret to inform the general public that after exhausting all avenues for dialogue and negotiation, we have been left with no choice but to proceed on an industrial strike effective today, Monday, August 25, 2025.

“This decision comes as a result of the failure of the Kwara State Government to implement the Consolidated Judicial Salary Structure (CONJUSS) for judiciary workers in the state, despite our repeated pleas and notifications, initially conveyed through the management of the Kwara State Judiciary, and recently addressed directly to the state government.

‘Our core demand is the immediate implementation of CONJUSS and a review of the salary and allowances for judiciary workers in Kwara State, which was last done in 2010 under the leadership of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki as the Executive Governor of the state. Since 15 years ago, nothing has been done to adjust our salaries to reflect the current economic realities, despite numerous requests.

“We find it deeply regrettable that the Judiciary, which stands as a crucial and equal arm of the government, is experiencing this unprecedented low treatment, while other branches have apparently been afforded the privilege of operating smoothly and enjoying various benefits, unchecked and unhampered.”

According to the statement, “This disparity in treatment raises concerns about fairness and balance within the governmental system in the state. These stark disparities highlight the pressing need to address such inequities to ensure that all branches function autonomously, effectively, and justly within our respective roles.

“We have written several letters to the management and the state government, including a 21-day strike notice between July 25 and August 18, 2025, and a seven-day notice to the Kwara State Government between August 18th and 25th, 2025, but our demands have fallen on deaf ears, and we have been met with utter disregard.

“The implementation of the Consolidated Judicial Salary Structure (CONJUSS) as part of the welfare mechanisms for judiciary workers in Kwara state is non-negotiable. If our respected Judges and other superior judicial officers can be treated with utmost respect and grandeur, the staff, for whatever reason(s), should not be held in servitude. We, as workers of the state judiciary hold the solid foundation of justice that the society enjoys, even though we have often been overlooked and underappreciated,” Gold said.

The union stated, “We, therefore, feel this is the right time for us to be treated with the respect and dignity that we deserve as human beings and as actors in the temple of justice. Our work is the backbone of our justice system, and our rights must be recognized and protected, because we are as human as those who consider our requests a luxury, not a necessity.

“We will not be intimidated, deterred, or back down until our demands are met. We urge all members and staff to remain at home until further notice, as a committee has been constituted to ensure strict compliance with this directive.

“We appreciate the understanding and support of our members and stakeholders during this challenging period. We will keep you updated on any developments and appreciate your continued support,” JUSUN added.
