At Least 20 Dead, 3,000 Displaced In Yobe Flood As Homes Collapse

Heavy rains have led to the collapse of many homes, especially mud houses.

Damaturu, Yobe State– Over 20 people have lost their lives and about 3,000 have been displaced over the past two weeks due to severe flooding caused by relentless heavy rainfall in Gashua, the headquarters of Bade Local Government Area in Yobe State.

The flood has caused widespread destruction, collapsing numerous homes and displacing over 3,000 residents.

Babagana Ibrahim, Executive Chairman of Bade Local Government Area, detailed the severe impact of the flooding, which has forced many to seek refuge in three designated relief camps.

Ibrahim stated that the government is working to meet the immediate needs of the displaced by providing food, medical care, hygiene kits, and clean drinking water to prevent the outbreak of diseases.

He also appealed for greater support from the federal government and donor organizations.

“The number of displaced persons has surged to around 3,000. We urgently need assistance from the federal government and donor agencies to deliver essential relief materials to the affected areas,” he said.

“Heavy rains have led to the collapse of many homes, especially mud houses. Just this morning, four deaths were confirmed in Gashua,” he added.

For the past ten days, the two main roads leading to Gashua have been cut off, complicating efforts by humanitarian workers to assist the displaced.

He urged residents of mud houses to evacuate to avoid further casualties from the ongoing flood.
