Chaos At Kwara Poly: Police Open Fire On Students Protesting NYSC Camp Relocation
The students blocked the main entrance to prevent new corps members, recently relocated from the Yipkata permanent camp due to security concerns, from entering the polytechnic.
Ilorin, Kwara State – Tensions erupted at Kwara State Polytechnic on Tuesday as Nigerian Police deployed teargas against protesting students demanding the relocation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp from the school campus.
In a video obtained by Afrika Eyes, students were seen running in panic as police officers approached the school gates in a van, releasing teargas within the campus.
The students blocked the main entrance to prevent new corps members, recently relocated from the Yipkata permanent camp due to security concerns, from entering the polytechnic.
Afrika Eyes gathered that the students are upset over being asked to vacate their hostels and the campus for three weeks to accommodate the incoming corps members.
Many students expressed frustration over the disruption of their academic activities and the perceived disregard for their safety.
Despite the peaceful nature of the protest, police officers were reportedly invited to the scene, leading to the violent dispersal of the students. Several students were affected by tear gas.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Kwara State Police Command nor the management of Kwara State Polytechnic had issued an official statement on the incident.
The NYSC has also not publicly addressed the concerns raised by the students, even as tensions continue to rise on campus.
