Rivers State To Hold Fresh Local Government Elections On August 9, 2025
The Chief Electoral Commissioner, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), disclosed the decision on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt.
Port Harcourt, Rivers State— The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has announced August 9, 2025, as the date for fresh local government elections following the Supreme Court’s ruling that nullified the previous poll.
The Chief Electoral Commissioner, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), disclosed the decision on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt.
This comes after the Supreme Court on Friday declared the October 5, 2024, local government election invalid.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara has assured Rivers residents that his administration will implement the court’s verdict after thoroughly reviewing its Certified True Copy (CTC).
In a statewide broadcast on Sunday, Fubara stated that his legal team expects to obtain the CTC by Friday, March 7, 2025.
To maintain governance at the local level, the governor has directed Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to take over the leadership of all 23 LGAs until the fresh election is conducted.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court also ruled against the Rivers State Government in a separate case, barring the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Accountant General of the Federation, and other agencies from disbursing funds to the state until it complies with past court orders.
