Four Soldiers Feared Dead, Other Injured As Drunk Driver Rams Into Jogging Troops In Lagos
The occupants of the vehicle reportedly attempted to flee but were apprehended by an angry mob.
Ikeja, Lagos State – Four soldiers attached to Myoung Barracks in the Morocco area of Shomolu, Lagos, are feared dead, while several others sustained injuries after a suspected drunk driver crashed into them during a routine morning jog on Friday.
Eyewitnesses said the driver, accompanied by two other young men in a speeding Toyota vehicle, lost control and plowed into the soldiers outside the barracks.
Priscilla, a resident of the area, described the incident as horrifying. “The car was moving at full speed when it suddenly rammed into the soldiers,” she said.
Following the crash, the occupants of the vehicle reportedly attempted to flee but were apprehended by an angry mob.
They were beaten, and their vehicle was vandalized before authorities intervened.
According to Punch, an eyewitness reported that one of the young men involved in the incident was stabbed.
She explained that the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning while soldiers were conducting their routine monthly road walk near the barracks. The young men allegedly drove into the group of soldiers.
“As a result, four soldiers lost their lives, and many others were seriously injured. After the crash, the young men tried to escape but were caught and severely beaten. Their vehicle was also vandalized, and one of them was stabbed by the soldiers,” the eyewitness said.
The incident has left residents in the area in a state of panic.
Security operatives have since taken the suspects into custody, while investigations are ongoing. The Nigerian Army has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
