Akure, Ondo State- No fewer than 13 people were burnt to death along Ikare-Akoko/ Owo Road on Saturday in Ondo state.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the victims were burned beyond recognition following a collision between two buses.
Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, the FRSC State Sector Commander, revealed in a statement that the incident occurred at around 10:14 a.m. near Abule Panu, before Ose Bridge.
“The crash involved 14 individuals. Sadly, 13 were burnt beyond recognition, while one survivor sustained severe injuries,” he stated.
Eyewitnesses reported that a tyre burst on one of the buses traveling from the Ikare axis caused the driver to lose control, leading to a head-on collision with another bus loaded with fabric coming from the Owo axis.
The collision ignited both vehicles, engulfing them in flames.
Emergency responders, including the FRSC, police, and fire service, swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the situation.
News Agency of Nigeria reports that the FRSC boss said that the injured victim was taken to Federal Medical Centre, Owo, while the deceased were deposited at the morgue of the same hospital.
He, therefore, advised drivers to exercise patience on the roads and passionately maintain their vehicles.
“Passengers are also encouraged to speak out against dangerous driving because road safety is a concern of all,” Ibitoye said.
