NNPCL To Hand Over Warri, Kaduna Refineries To Private Operators

The decision to engage private operators was revealed in a statement released on Friday through NNPCL’s official X handle.

Abuja, Nigeria- The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced its intention to transfer the management of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company and the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company to private operators.

The refineries, which together have a combined nameplate capacity of 235,000 barrels per day, will be operated and maintained by reputable and credible Operations and Maintenance companies.

The decision to engage private operators was revealed in a statement released on Friday through NNPCL’s official X handle.

The Warri Refinery, located in Warri, Delta State, was commissioned in 1978. It is a complex conversion facility with a nameplate distillation capacity of 6,250,000 MTA (125,000 bpd). The refinery includes a petrochemical plant that began operations in 1988, with production capacities of 13,000 MTA of polypropylene and 18,000 MTA of carbon black.

The facility is designed to serve markets in Nigeria’s southern and southwestern regions.

The Kaduna Refinery, commissioned in 1980, was established to supply petroleum products to Northern Nigeria, initially with a capacity of 50,000 bpd. In 1983, its capacity was doubled to 100,000 bpd with the addition of a second 50,000 bpd crude train dedicated to producing lubricating oils.

Further expansion in 1986 increased the capacity of the first crude train to 60,000 bpd, raising the refinery’s current nameplate capacity to 110,000 bpd.
