Mother, 9-Day-Old Baby Die In Akure Building Collapse

The elder brother of the baby and their grandmother sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Akure, Ondo State– A one-story building collapsed, killed a mother and her nine-day-old baby in Akure, the state capital.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at Ayedun Street around Hospital/Egbe Road in the early hours of Wednesday, December 13, 2023, when a newly installed overhead water tank fell and crashed into the building.

According to a neighbor, the baby who was christened on Tuesday, died instantly while the elder brother of the baby and their grandmother sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“The building collapsed due to the water tank erected inside the compound. It was newly erected and the blocks weren’t dry enough when it was erected. It was a sad incident,” he said.

The police evacuated the woman and her child’s bodies, depositing them at a morgue in Akure, while the injured were already receiving treatment.

Spokesperson of the State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, said the collapse was caused by the overhead tank newly installed in the compound.
