Johannesburg, South Africa – South Africa’s Transport Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, said on Tuesday that she had been subjected to a harrowing robbery near Johannesburg in a highly unusual attack on the vehicle she was travelling in.
The incident occurred on Monday as Minister Chikunga was driving along a major road on the outskirts of Johannesburg. According to the Ministry of Transport, the car suddenly came to a halt after running over spikes that appeared to have been deliberately placed in its path.
The Ministry issued a statement, explaining that the incident “immobilized the car and allowed the criminals to steal valuables.”
During a parliamentary meeting, Minister Chikunga described the terrifying experience. She revealed that her bodyguards had exited the vehicle to change the punctured tires when three armed men, dressed in a “well-dressed” manner and with their faces concealed by balaclavas, approached her.
“They opened my door,” she recounted, “put a gun to my head, and ordered me out.” She further stated that the encounter was “traumatic and devastating.”
The men demanded money, and the minister disclosed that she had only about ten euros in her possession. Additionally, her laptop and phone were taken by the assailants.
The South African police released a statement confirming that the bodyguards were also robbed of their weapons, stating, “Personal effects and two firearms were stolen.”
A comprehensive investigation has been initiated, and a manhunt is underway to locate the suspects responsible for this armed robbery. The incident has sparked concern over the security of public officials and the need for heightened safety measures, especially on major roads and highways.
