NLC, TUC Declare Nationwide Strike From Nov 14
The Organized Labor also insisted on the arrest and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides
Abuja, Nigeria– The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly declared a total nationwide strike set to take effect next Tuesday, November 14, 2023.
The two union’s leadership reached a resolution following an extraordinary National Executive Council meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
The two major labor unions have announced the immediate commencement of nationwide mobilization of their members and allies.
The Organized Labor’s action was prompted by the recent brutalization of NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State last week.
Meanwhile, the Organized Labor has expressed widespread outrage, accusing the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mohammed Barde, of complicity in the recent attack on Ajaero in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
Last Friday, Organized Labor issued a five-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the replacement of the police commissioner. They also attributed the attack on Ajaero to Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is seeking re-election, although the governor has denied any involvement in the attack on the labor leader.
The Organized Labor also insisted on the arrest and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides, accompanied by a warning of a nationwide industrial action if their demands were not addressed.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has already redeployed Barde on Sunday for the sake of neutrality, in preparation for the November 11, 2023, governorship election in Imo State.
