Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State– Detectives from the Ekiti State Police Command have arrested a couple, Mr Ajayi Opeyemi and Asake Opeyemi, who were found to be engaged in a series of burglaries.
The police operation led to the recovery of stolen goods with an estimated value of N3 million Naira.
Addressing the press at the Command Headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, the Commissioner of Police, CP Dare Ogundare, revealed that the suspects were apprehended in Eyin-Ogbe quarters, Aramoko-Ekiti, situated in the Ekiti West local government area of the state. The arrests were made by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives attached to the command.
CP Dare Ogundare described the couple as serial burglars, stating that they were captured at a criminal hideout in the community on September 22, 2023, following credible information provided by residents in the area.
According to the police chief, the duo had targeted more than five different houses and shops belonging to various owners in the ancient community, making off with valuable goods before being apprehended by law enforcement.
During questioning, Mr Ajayi Opeyemi, a carpenter and father of two, claimed to be a victim of circumstances. He admitted to the commission of the crimes and disclosed that the stolen goods were found in his wife’s shop.
He further revealed that his wife usually transported the stolen items to neighbouring communities for sale.
A wide range of stolen goods was recovered from the suspects, including 400 pieces of jeans trousers, shirts, short knickers, jackets, face caps, underwear, large quantities of women’s accessories and lingerie, assorted wines, provisions, and foodstuffs, all valued at about N3 million.
The suspects are currently in detention at the Anti-Crime section of the command in Ado-Ekiti, where they are cooperating with the police in providing additional information related to their criminal activities.
CP Dare Ogundare assured the public that the couple would be arraigned in court once the investigation was completed, emphasizing the commitment of the Ekiti State Police Command to maintain law and order in the state.
