Six Dead, Five Injured As Trucks Crush Tricycles In Ibadan

The accident which involved a trailer conveying tiles, a lorry loaded with soft drinks, and two tricycles occurred at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko on Akanran Road

Ibadan, Oyo State– At least Six persons have lost their lives while five others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a road accident in Ibadan, Oyo State.

It was gathered that the accident which involved a trailer conveying tiles, a lorry loaded with soft drinks, and two tricycles occurred at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko on Akanran Road, in the Ona Ara Local Government Area of the state on Monday morning, October 14, 2024.

Among the injured victims are two primary school children, one of whom was reportedly with their mother, who tragically did not survive the crash.

An witnesses reported that the trailer lost control while descending a slope, leading to the collision with the unsuspecting tricycles.

A staff of the Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency said the accident was caused by the brake failure of the trailer that was descending the slope of the road.

“When the trailer lost control, it collided with a tricycle commonly known as a Keke NAPEP. A second lorry carrying soft drinks, coming from behind, attempted to avoid the trailer but ended up hitting and crushing another Keke NAPEP,” a witness said.

“We learned that six people lost their lives while five others were injured. All the victims have since been transported from the scene.”

In addition to the tricycles, two cars were also damaged in the series of accidents.

Sympathizers, who were prevented from setting the vehicles on fire, blamed the drivers—who have since fled—and claimed the accident could have been mitigated if the driver of the trailer, which lost its brakes, had swerved into a ditch instead of heading directly towards the oncoming tricycle.

Raji Wale, the Managing Director of Amuloko City Hospital, confirmed that several victims were taken to his facility.

“Four patients were brought to our hospital following the accident that occurred early this morning (Monday). Six victims arrived here with various injuries, while some were taken to other hospitals. We managed to accommodate those brought here. Two have been treated as outpatients; they are stable and have since been discharged,” Wale added.

“Two children are currently receiving treatment downstairs. One child was in the Keke NAPEP with his mother, who did not survive. The other two, who sustained severe injuries, have been admitted and are receiving care. We are actively monitoring their progress.”
