Severe Flooding Wreaks Havoc In Cheledi Community, Bauchi State

A senior man, known simply as Mr. Idris, was visibly wandering around in a confused state, having lost eight rooms to the Cheledi flood.

Severe flooding has inflicted substantial damage to properties within Cheledi, in the Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The affected individuals are grappling with a sense of devastation, while the state government has pledged swift interventions to aid the impacted residents.

Cheledi has been included among the 56 communities for which a flood prediction alert has been issued by the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA).

Following the flooding on Thursday night, the residents of the town, especially the women, displayed evident distress as they pondered the extent of their losses.

However, the measures that were implemented proved insufficient to prevent the havoc caused by heavy rainfall.

Due to the accumulation of silt, the drainage systems became clogged, leading to the collapse of several buildings. While certain residents have managed to evacuate their homes, others are currently engaged in the task of removing floodwaters from their properties.

Reacting to the situation, the state government dispatched a delegation to evaluate the extent of the damage.

It was determined that the hills served as the primary source of the floodwater, raising concerns about the potential for a repeat incident, the state government has committed to taking prompt measures to alleviate the impact.
