Senate Approves Nigerian Troops Deployment To Benin After Attempted Coup
Akpabio described the move as a critical step toward regional stability.
Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin, following last weekend’s attempted coup in the West African nation.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the approval during plenary, confirming that lawmakers, after deliberating in the Committee of the Whole under Section 5, Part II, had unanimously voted in favour of the deployment.
Akpabio described the move as a critical step toward regional stability, stressing that unrest in any neighbouring state is a threat to Nigeria and the wider West African region.
“An injury to one is an injury to all,” he said, emphasizing Nigeria’s obligation to support its Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) partners in maintaining peace and security.
The Senate’s consent letter will be transmitted to President Tinubu immediately, providing the legal backing for Nigeria’s regional security intervention.
