Obasa Claims Meranda Has Resigned As Lagos Speaker Amid Leadership Crisis
He alleged that Meranda informed leaders of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) at a meeting in Marina that she had stepped down.
Ikeja, Lagos State— The leadership tussle in the Lagos State House of Assembly took a new turn on Thursday as embattled former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa claimed that his successor, Mojisola Meranda, has resigned.
Obasa, who was removed by 36 of the 40-member Assembly but insists he remains Speaker, made the claim during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.
He alleged that Meranda informed leaders of the Lagos All Progressives Congress (APC) at a meeting in Marina that she had stepped down.
“There was a meeting that took place in Marina where we had in attendance all the party leaders. Openly, Meranda herself made the statement that she had stepped down, she had resigned,” Obasa said.
The controversy deepened after reports that Meranda’s security aides were withdrawn while Obasa’s were restored. Defending the move, Obasa argued that relinquishing office meant giving up its privileges.
Meanwhile, he continues to reject his removal, stating, “I have never been removed from office. I am not against any removal, but if you are going to do that, you must follow the rules of the House. It is constitutional to impeach and remove, but you have to follow the dictates of the Constitution.”
