The Nigerian Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees Union (NUAAE) has issued a call for the inclusion of the workforce in the government’s food security program and the urgent approval of hazard allowance.

The Union in a press statement signed by the National President, Comrade Simon Anchaver, and Comrade M.I Zubair respectively, said they regrets the exclusion of the union and the agricultural workforce from the recent declaration of a National Emergency on Food Security by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“As major stakeholders in the pursuit of the government’s agricultural programs, we stand in full support of the initiative. However, we strongly emphasize the need for the inclusion of the union and the entire workforce in the planning, implementation, and execution of these vital policies.

“The agricultural sector in Nigeria plays a pivotal role in ensuring food security and economic stability for our nation.

“The hardworking agricultural workers are the driving force behind these efforts, tirelessly toiling in the fields to cultivate and produce food for our citizens. It is therefore disheartening that their voices and expertise have not been adequately represented in the decision-making process regarding the National Emergency on Food Security.

“The NUAAE recognizes the importance of collaboration and inclusivity in achieving national goals. We firmly believe that the success of any agricultural program depends on the collective effort and involvement of all stakeholders, including the labor force. We possess valuable insights, expertise, and on-the-ground experience that can significantly contribute to the effective implementation and execution of the government’s food security initiatives.

“Furthermore, the NUAAE calls for the urgent approval of Hazard Allowance across the board for agricultural workers. These dedicated men and women face numerous occupational hazards, including exposure to harsh weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, and physical strain. Hazard Allowance is a justifiable and necessary measure to recognize and appreciate their invaluable contributions while also ensuring their welfare and well-being.

“We, therefore, urge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to recognize the importance of inclusive governance and immediately engage the Nigerian Union of Agriculture and Allied Employees and the entire agricultural workforce in the design, planning, and execution of the National Emergency on Food Security. By doing so, the government will harness the immense potential and expertise of the workforce, leading to more robust and sustainable agricultural policies and programs.

“The NUAAE remains committed to the growth and development of Nigeria’s agricultural sector and stands ready to collaborate with the government to achieve our shared vision of food security for all Nigerians.”
