The Labour Party in Kwara State has distanced itself from its governorship candidate, Abubakar Basambo, for endorsing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate,  Alhaji Shuaib Yaman Abdullahi.

Mr Kehinde Rotimi, the Kwara State Chairman of the Labour Party, confirmed this at a news conference in Ilorin on Monday, March 14, 2023.

He described Basambo’s action as mischief, in that he has no authority to endorse any other candidate on behalf of the party, and said the Labour party is built with ideology and based on social justice and equality.

He stated that the party has not adopted any candidate for the forthcoming election.

“We are in a sober mood because our presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi was wanted by all Nigerians and he was voted for massively but the Nigeria system gave his mandate to another person as usual.

“Currently, it is morally wrong for the party to come out and adopt any party against the wish of our presidential candidate.

Mr Rotimi urge Kwarans to disregard Basambo’s endorsement as false and misleading, calling on supporters and other stakeholders to remain calm as the party is united.

He reiterates their commitment to the Nigeria project, as Nigerians have much belief in the party, and says the party will not betray the trust.

He added that the Labour party presidential candidate has never mandated the party in the state to work for PDP or any party in Nigeria.

“While for Basambo we are working on it because he came out publicly to endorse the PDP governorship candidate, and called his supporters to vote for PDP which is an offence for us,”

According to the party, the action of the governorship candidate is motivated by personal gains.

” All our candidates are contesting for the coming election and we have not liaised or metamorphosed into any political party, our mandate is sacrosanct and we will not negotiate it.

“Labour party has not collected any money from anybody, and those who collected money are not members of the party,” he said.

According to him, Abubakar Basambo with those who endorsed the PDP governorship candidate has been suspended from the party till further notice.

He, however, called on the party’s supporters to get their PVCs ready and vote for the party governorship candidate and also to those who are aspiring for membership of the state assembly on March 19.

Meanwhile, Eyindero Elizebath, the Deputy Gubernatorial candidate of the party, said all candidates in the Labour party are still intact.

She explained that since the principal candidate of the party has left the party, she assumes the position of the candidate in the party as of now henceforth.
