Abuja, NigeriaJustice M.S. Liman of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that detained activist Omoyele Sowore must file a formal bail application, rejecting an oral request made by his lawyer, Abubakar Marshall.

During Wednesday’s court session, Marshall argued that the cybercrime charges filed against Sowore by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, were bailable.

However, Justice Liman insisted that due process be followed, requiring a formal application.

Following the court’s decision, the prosecution counsel, M.U. Jonathan, along with Sowore’s defense team—Marshall and Deji Adeyanju—agreed to return to court at 3:00 p.m. for the bail hearing.

The judge subsequently stood the case down until the scheduled time.

Earlier in the day, Sowore pleaded not guilty to the charges, which stem from his social media post referring to Egbetokun as an “Illegal IGP.”

He entered the dock at approximately 10:00 a.m., firmly stating his innocence in response to each count read before the court.

The case continues as legal teams prepare for the formal bail application hearing later today.
