Journalism Is A Key Element In Holding Power Accountable- Dapo Olorunyomi

The primary principle of journalism within a democratic framework is the commitment to accountability.

Ilorin, Kwara State – Mr Dapo Olorunyomi, the Publisher of Premium Times and Founder of the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) on Friday, says journalism is the ingredient that makes democracy function.

Speaking at the Informant24/7 office with Afrika Eyes‘ Publisher, Buhari Olanrewaju Ahmed, and Informant24/7’s Publisher, Shola Taofeek Salihu, in Ilorin, Mr. Olorunyomi explained the vital role of accountability journalism in sustaining democracy.

The Premium Times publisher emphasized that democracy without accountability journalism is impossible. Examining Nigeria’s development crisis, one could attribute it to a deficiency in the local press, highlighting the vital role of accountability reporting.

He explained that journalism is a key element in holding power accountable, stating that accountability is the foundational principle of journalism in a democratic context.

Mr. Olorunyomi stressed the significance of accountability journalism, describing it as a vital aspect of media designed to make democracy effective and development possible.

“Today, any reputable Nigeria newsroom must have an investigative platform. We aimed to establish many of these early platforms to strengthen journalism with a commitment to truthfulness.”

“We established the fact-checking platform ‘Dubawa’ and expanded its reach to nearly every newsroom. It’s an honour and a pleasure that many of our programs are not only in Nigeria but also in the entire English-speaking West Africa.”

Acknowledging the growth of CJID’s influence, he said they have received a lot of invitations to teach in French West African countries and also spread tentacles across Central Africa.

According to him, the primary principle of journalism within a democratic framework is the commitment to accountability.

Mr Olorunyomi, explained Premium Times’ journey, highlight the initial belief and commitment despite scepticism from colleagues.

He said today, Premium Times has emerged as a leading investigative platform in the country.

Mr. Olorunyomi commended Afrika Eyes and Informant24/7 publishers, while he also urged them to persist in their journalistic efforts.

He, however, emphasized the challenges of sustaining true journalism.
