A response from the coordinating team sought to reassure him: “Sir, they will remain overhead and coordinate with the troops moving towards you, Sir.”
Minutes later, Brig.-Gen. Uba provided another update on his situation:“My battery is 31% now.”
His final words captured the bravery that marked his career: “Sir, I am on foot, but once I see the aircraft, I can raise my peak cap.”
However, contact with Brig.-Gen. Uba was lost shortly after this message, and he was later reported dead at the hands of ISWAP terrorists.
Afrika Eyes had earlier reported that Uba has been reportedly killed by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists after they intercepted his location along the volatile Damboa–Biu axis in Borno State.
PRNigeria reports that the General came under ambush shortly after leading a joint air and ground offensive against insurgent targets in the region.
Despite initially confirming his safety to his superiors following the operation, the officer’s location was allegedly exposed and tracked by terrorists, culminating in his abduction and brutal execution.
The report suggests that ISWAP militants captured Brigadier General Uba alive and later executed him after subjecting him to an interrogation session.
In a photograph seen by Afrika Eyes, Gen. Uba is shown seated with bloodstains on his leg.
Earlier, the Brigade Commander had recorded a video, which was shared publicly, stating that he was safe. However, after several hours, he reportedly lost orientation in the forest.
Security expert Zagazola Makama confirmed that both ground troops and air assets made multiple attempts to rescue the Commander, who had informed them that he was making his way back to base.
“Unfortunately, he was recaptured by the terrorists after reports of his initial abduction went viral.”
Hiwever, the Nigerian Army is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
