Ilorin, Kwara State– The socio-political organization, Orisun Igbomina, has described the performance of Senator Lola Ashiru, who represents Kwara South, as ‘below par’, citing what they term as lackluster delivery on key issues affecting the constituency.

The group stressed that Senator Ashiru’s purported underperformance has left many constituents disillusioned and yearning for better representation

Senator Ashiru, who also doubles as the Deputy Senate Leader in the upper chamber, took over from Senator Rafiu Ibrahim in 2019 after the late Ibrahim lost his re-election bid.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the President General of Orisun Igbomina, Chief Gbenga Awoyale, he expressed his deep concern over the manner in which the people of Kwara South have been assessing the late Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, who served for only four years, in comparison to the incumbent Senator Ashiru, who is currently serving his second term of four years in the Nigerian Senate.

According to him, “People have continued to rate the late Ibrahim’s performance within four years above his successor’s, who has been in the Senate for almost five years now.”

“The call for improvement from Senator Ashiru underscores the importance of effective representation and responsive governance in meeting the needs of the people, as constituents continue to evaluate and compare the legacies of past and present senators.”

“Yoruba people say, ‘It is the ineptitude of the living that makes us remember the dead.’ The passing of Sen. Rafiu serves as a lesson to every politician, particularly the incumbent Senator Ashiru, urging him to govern effectively. This serves as a reminder that people will remember him favorably after leaving office. Political tenure is ephemeral.

Awoyale added that people have continued to rate the late Ibrahim’s performance within four years above his successor’s, who has been in the Senate for almost five years now with nothing to show.

“May God rest the soul of Sen. Rafiu in perfect peace. The unfolding development made some of us sober and challenges us as stakeholders to reflect deeply. Not only PDP members are speaking good about Sen. Rafiu, not only Kwara South people but across the State. This is in sharp contrast to the current Senator. If Ashiru can’t match Sen. Rafiu’s standard, he should at least stop working below par.”

He said residents of Kwara South seem to hold the late Senator Rafiu Ibrahim in high regard for his past performance and contributions to the region, more so than the serving senator.

“We urged Senator Ashiru to take note of these sentiments and work towards enhancing his service delivery to better meet the expectations of his constituents,” Awoyale said.

However, the group reiterated its commitment to holding elected officials accountable and advocating for improved governance and development in the region.

They called on Senator Ashiru to heed the concerns raised and intensify efforts towards fulfilling his mandate to the people of Kwara South.
