The slip occurred during the highly anticipated ceremony held at Independence Square in Accra.
Accra, Ghana – Ghana’s newly sworn-in President, John Mahama, made an unexpected blunder during his inauguration speech, referring to Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu as the “President of Ghana.”
The slip occurred during the highly anticipated ceremony held at Independence Square in Accra, with dignitaries from across Africa and the globe in attendance.
According to Mahama, “Honorable members of parliament, Excellency, the vice president of the Republic of Ghana, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. A leadership, the chief justice, your excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, president of the Federal Republic of Ghana, and special guest of honor for this occasion.
“Your excellencies, presidents, heads of government and development agencies, your excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and former presidents, your excellency, doctor Mahmoudu Baumia, distinguished invited guests, ladies and gentlemen, my brothers and sisters, I wish you a good morning, and we give thanks.”
Mahama was re-elected as president in the 2024 election, securing a victory over the incumbent vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia.
However, the win made him the first president in Ghana’s history to be democratically elected for a non-consecutive second term.
