Former NURTW Chief Calls For Police Removal From Union Office As NLC Demand
Alhaji Ajao appealed to the NLC to remove the presence of police at the NURTW headquarters from the list of labor demands
Alhaji Moshood Ajao, the ex-deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has urged the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress to refrain from getting involved in the internal disputes within the NURTW.
Alhaji Ajao expressed concern over the inclusion of the alleged “siege” of the national headquarters of NURTW in Garki 2, Abuja, as one of the six conditions presented by the NLC to the federal government.
In a statement signed in Osogbo, the former Deputy General Secretary clarified that the presence of the police at the NURTW headquarters was at the request of the current executive leadership of the Union.
Alhaji Ajao reiterated that Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa’s tenure as the National President of NURTW concluded on August 28, 2023. He expressed confusion as to why the NLC was protesting the presence of the police, as they were invited by the current President, Alhaji Tajudeen Badiru Agbede, to ensure the preservation of law and order.
Alhaji Ajao, who served as a career officer for thirty-five years before retiring as Deputy General Secretary, emphasized that the events unfolding at the national level of NURTW are in compliance with the Union’s constitution.
He noted that both the former President, Alhaji Baruwa, and the current President, Alhaji Agbede, hail from the South West region, and the South West zone fully supports the incumbent President, Alhaji Agbede.
The former Deputy General Secretary pointed out that the concluded tenure of Alhaji Baruwa as President resulted in significant setbacks for NURTW in the South West region. He asserted that his perceived authoritarian approach led to the suspension of NURTW activities in five out of the six states within the zone, with only Ekiti state continuing its operations.
Alhaji Ajao appealed to the NLC to remove the presence of police at the NURTW headquarters from the list of labor demands regarding the subsidy removal from the federal government.
