A police officer on Friday reportedly took her own life by shooting herself at Kiandutu police station in Thika.
The Commanding Officer, speaking on the matter, confirmed that the officer, identified as Irene Wangari Migongo, tragically committed suicide at approximately 9:45 am.
Officer Peter Muigai Njoroge, who was in his residential house within the station premises at the time, reported the incident.
Njoroge said he heard a loud noise coming from Migongo’s house, prompting him to alert the OCS.
Upon investigating, they found the deceased lying on the floor facing upward.
“Besides her was the steyr rifle which the officer was issued as she was preparing to report on today’s (Friday) patrol duties,” police said.
Crime scene investigators determined that Migongo’s cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, resulting in her immediate demise.
The rifle, along with 19 rounds of ammunition, has been recovered for additional administrative procedures. Police are currently in the process of determining the circumstances that led to the incident.
Colleagues of the deceased have stated that she had never shown any signs of stress prior to this tragic event.
“The only message she posted yesterday (Thursday) at 8:26 pm on her mobile status read, “Because tomorrow may never be mine”, accompanied by the song ‘Sweet bye bye’,” police added.
Migongo’s body has been transported to the Kenyatta University funeral home, as reported by The Star.
