Ebonyi Governor Orders Arrest Of Six Commissioners Over Alleged Contract Breach
The Nigeria Police have reportedly issued invitation letters to some officials who were absent when the committee visited their residences.
Abakaliki, Ebonyi State – Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has ordered the arrest of six commissioners and the suspension of Afikpo Local Government Chairman, Mr. Timothy Nwachi, over an alleged breach of contract terms for the construction of 140 housing units for Izzo and Amaze communities.
The arrested commissioners include Professor Omari Omaka (Tertiary Education), Victor Chukwu (Environment), Ifeanyi Ogbuewu (Culture and Tourism), Uchenna Igwe (Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters), Moses Ekuma (Health), and Felix Igboke (Project Monitoring). Prior to their arrest, they had been declared wanted by the state government.
Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki, the Chairman of the State Executive Council Committee on the Izzo and Amaze Housing Project, Ilang Donatus, explained that the government took the action due to the officials’ alleged failure to meet contractual obligations.
The governor reportedly views the delay in completing the housing project as a deliberate act of sabotage against his administration’s plans.
“The governor is not happy over the pace of the work, which should have been completed by now,” Donatus stated. “He is deeply committed to providing relief through these housing units, especially for victims of communal crises. The non-completion of the project is unacceptable.”
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Mobilization, Ebonyi Central, Mrs. Maria Okohu, also criticised the contractors and supervising commissioners for their alleged negligence, labeling it an act of sabotage.
In a further crackdown, the government has directed security agencies to track down other implicated commissioners and contractors who evaded arrest.
The Nigeria Police have reportedly issued invitation letters to some officials who were absent when the committee visited their residences.
Governor Nwifuru’s firm stance signals a zero-tolerance approach to project delays and contractual violations within his administration.
