Drama In Abuja As Angry Workers Chase FCT Minister Wike’s Convoy After He Slips Out Through Back Gate

Abuja, Nigeria– Drama unfolded on Monday at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Secretariat in Abuja as angry workers, backed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), protested against unresolved labour disputes and chased the convoy of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, after he allegedly sneaked out of the office through a back gate.

The protesting workers, who had shut down activities at the FCTA Secretariat and the National Industrial Court as part of a total and indefinite strike, erupted in fury upon realising that the Minister had exited the premises without addressing their demands.

Chanting “Ole! Ole!! Ole!!!” repeatedly, the protesters pursued Wike’s convoy in an attempt to intercept him, creating a tense atmosphere around the secretariat as security operatives struggled to contain the situation.

Earlier, the workers had picketed the main gate of the Minister’s office, defying and confronting armed anti-riot policemen deployed to the area.

The protesters demanded Wike’s removal, accusing the FCTA leadership of insensitivity, intimidation, and persistent violations of workers’ rights.

The strike action followed a directive by the Nigeria Labour Congress, which threw its full weight behind the workers, describing the protest as justified and long overdue.

The NLC accused the management and political leadership of the FCTA of repeatedly ignoring agreements and failing to address long-standing welfare and employment-related grievances.

According to the workers, all official activities within the FCTA Secretariat were paralysed as staff withdrew their services indefinitely until their demands are met.

Court activities at the National Industrial Court were also disrupted as part of the coordinated action.

Eyewitnesses said the situation nearly degenerated into chaos as protesters surged toward the exit routes after discovering that the Minister had allegedly escaped through a rear gate, shielded by security personnel.

The NLC has warned that the strike will continue until concrete steps are taken to address the grievances, insisting that workers will no longer tolerate what it described as “arrogance, repression, and disregard for labour rights” within the FCTA.
