Court Grants Emefiele Permission To Travel Out Of FCT

The charges against the former governor of the CBN have been amended from 6 to 20.

Abuja, Nigeria– Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted permission to Godwin Emefiele, the embattled immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to travel outside the FCT.

Emefiele, through his lawyer, Mathew Bukka, SAN, requested a modification of the terms, as his initial bail conditions stipulated that he must stay within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Counsel of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, who did not object to the request, told the court to ensure that Emefiele wrote an undertaking that he would remain in the country if his plea was granted.

Following the disclosure, the court granted Emefiele permission to travel out of the FCT. He must however remain in the country.

The charges against the former governor of the CBN have been amended from 6 to 20.

The revised charges against Emefiele now include criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit felony.

Recalled on December 24, 2023, the court granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N300 million with two sureties in like sum.

He was arraigned on a six-count charge related to procurement fraud and utilizing his position to provide a corrupt advantage to Sa’adatu Yaro, a CBN staff, through the award of a contract for the procurement of 43 vehicles worth N1.2 billion between 2018 and 2020.
