Concerned Kwarans Urge Gov AbdulRazaq To Mitigate Economic Impact Of Demolition Exercise

The civic group called on the state government to consider the financial repercussions for those whose properties are being demolished

Ilorin, Kwara StateConcerned Kwarans, a civic group dedicated to the well-being and security of Kwara State, has expressed its concerns over the recent government-led demolition of structures on setbacks in the state.

The group acknowledges the substantial challenges that come with governance and the necessity of making tough decisions to enhance public welfare and safety.

In a statement released on Thursday, May 23, 2024, obtained by Afrika Eyes, the group emphasized the importance of the actions for the state’s best interest and highlighted the potential profound economic impact on the citizens affected by the demolitions.

The civic group called on the state government to consider the financial repercussions for those whose properties are being demolished and to explore possible mitigation measures.

According to the statement, the group highlights the adverse effects of President Tinubu’s economic reforms, notably the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira.

Concerned Kwarans called on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to take immediate and proactive measures to mitigate the economic impact of the demolitions. Their recommendations include:

“Ensuring that various economic projects in the state begin operations to create jobs and other economic opportunities.

“Assessing the impact of the ongoing demolition and implementing programs to mitigate the economic effects on those affected. Based on this assessment, it is crucial to implement targeted programs to support those affected, such as financial assistance, job placement and retraining programs to help displaced individuals find new employment opportunities.

” Investing the state’s significant revenue in social and economic projects that offer viable returns on investment. This includes infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and other essential services that improve the quality of life for all Kwaran. Additionally, investing in sustainable development projects can create long-term economic benefits and reduce dependency on volatile revenue streams.

“Urgently reviewing and increasing the 10,000 naira wage award to state workers, considering the rising cost of living and inflation. Kwara State currently pays one of the lowest wage awards in the country, and an increase would help alleviate the financial burden on public sector employees, enhancing their productivity and morale.

The group also expressed gratitude to Kwarans for their law-abiding nature. It encouraged continued patriotism and constructive criticism of the government to ensure transparency, accountability, and the continuous improvement of governance in the state.
