BREAKING: Senate Forms Committee To Address Controversies In Tax Reform Bills
The bills have faced widespread opposition from governors, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and some federal lawmakers.
Abuja, Nigeria- The Nigerian Senate has constituted a committee, chaired by Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), to address contentious aspects of the tax reform bills recently transmitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The committee is expected to consult with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the executive arm of government, and other critical stakeholders before a public hearing is conducted.
This was made know during Wednesday’s plenary by Deputy Senate President Barau I Jibrin (APC, Kano North), who presided over the session.
Barau acknowledged the controversies surrounding the proposed bills and stressed the importance of the committee’s work in resolving grey areas.
It would be recalled that President Tinubu had forwarded four tax reform bills to the National Assembly on October 3, 2024, outlining their significance in strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal institutions and aligning with the government’s broader development goals.
However, the bills have faced widespread opposition from governors, traditional rulers, civil society groups, and some federal lawmakers.
The review committee includes prominent senators such as Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orjir Uzor Kalu (Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), and Abdullahi Yahaha (Kebbi North), among others. They are tasked with providing a detailed report to the Senate before public hearings on the bills commence.
