Rep. Kevin McCarthy has been elected as the  Speaker of the United States House of Representatives after multiple days of negotiations and 15 rounds of voting.

The election was said to have bbeenthe longest speaker contest in 164 years.

CNN reports that McCarthy’s election followed a chaotic night on the House floor, including an extraordinary confrontation between McCarthy and Rep. Matt Gaetz during the 14th round of voting.

After his eventual election early Saturday morning, all members of the 118th Congress were sworn in.

The new Congress is said to boast a record-setting number of women and several history makers, from the House’s first Gen-Z lawmaker to the longest-serving woman in congressional history.

The House is now adjourned until 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan.9.
