Ikeja, Lagos State – Mojisola Lasbat Meranda has resigned as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, clearing the path for the return of her predecessor, Mudashiru Obasa, amid intense political maneuvering within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Meranda’s resignation was announced during Monday’s plenary session, following mounting pressure from top APC leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and Lagos APC Chairman Cornelius Ojelabi.
It was gathered that Meranda had been under sustained pressure to step aside as party loyalists rallied behind Obasa, who was ousted over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
Her removal is seen as a strategic move by the APC leadership to consolidate control over the state legislature, despite concerns raised by lawmakers who had previously opposed Obasa’s return.
Obasa, who had led the Assembly before his removal, has been at the center of controversy over alleged financial mismanagement.
However, his allies within the party have worked tirelessly to secure his reinstatement, arguing that his leadership is crucial for maintaining party dominance ahead of future elections.
