Bandit Commander Frees 28 Captives In Katsina After Peace Deal

Katsina State– A notorious bandit commander, Isya Akwashi Garwa, has released 28 abducted persons in Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State following a peace arrangement brokered with local authorities.

Garwa, who was reportedly armed with an AK-47 rifle and ammunition, handed over the captives to council officials on Wednesday.

The freed victims were mainly residents of Mairua, Kanen-haki, and Yar Dabaru communities, who had been held in captivity for several weeks.

Local officials confirmed the development, describing it as part of ongoing reconciliation efforts to reduce banditry and violent attacks across the region.

They expressed optimism that the move could pave the way for sustained peace in Faskari and surrounding communities long troubled by armed groups.

The release comes as Katsina State continues to explore dialogue and community-driven approaches in addressing the persistent security challenges affecting the North-West.

Security expert Zagazola Makama disclosed the development on his X handle, noting that community leaders in Faskari welcomed it as a positive step and urged both parties to sustain the peace process.

They also appealed to the bandit leader to compel other groups still carrying out attacks in the area to desist.

A council official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the captives were released in the afternoon without any ransom.

“The captives were released this afternoon without any ransom being paid. The bandit leader fulfilled his promise under the peace talks,” he said.

Meanwhile, residents expressed relief over the safe return of the abductees, while some called for stronger security guarantees to ensure the gesture translates into lasting peace.
