A Nigerian footballer, Ademola Lookman, has been named the 2024 African Footballer of the Year, solidifying his reputation as one of the world’s top players during a landmark season.

The Super Eagles star edged out South Africa’s Ronwen Williams, Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, and Côte d’Ivoire’s Simon Adingra to claim the prestigious title.

Lookman’s victory ensures the award stays in Nigeria, following his teammate Victor Osimhen’s win last year.

Lookman’s crowning achievement was his historic hat trick in the UEFA Europa League final, securing Atalanta their first-ever European silverware and the second major trophy in their 117-year history.

The 27-year-old also shone on the international stage, netting three goals as Nigeria reached the final of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations, though they narrowly lost to Côte d’Ivoire after a late strike by Sébastien Haller.

For his club, Atalanta, Lookman delivered an impressive 2023-24 season with 17 goals and 10 assists in 45 appearances. His form has continued this campaign, tallying 11 goals in 19 matches as Atalanta leads Serie A.

The CAF award, first officially presented in 1992, adds Lookman to an elite list of African football legends, marking another proud moment for Nigerian football.
