BREAKING: Court Convicts IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu Of Terrorism, Sit-At-Home Threats
Prosecutors argued the message was meant to intimidate the population and destabilise the nation — a violation under Section 1(2)(b) of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act.
Abuja, Nigeria– A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja today found Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), guilty on three grave charges: terrorism via broadcast threats, enforcing an illegal sit-at-home order by intimidation, and belonging to a proscribed organisation.
Count 1 – Terrorist Broadcasts: The court held that Kanu committed “an act of terrorism against the Federal Republic of Nigeria” by making a broadcast in which he threatened that “people will die” and that “the whole world will be at a standstill.”
Prosecutors argued the message was meant to intimidate the population and destabilise the nation — a violation under Section 1(2)(b) of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act.
Count 2 – Sit-At-Home Intimidation: Kanu was also convicted for threats enforcing an illegal sit-at-home order.
According to the court, he issued “deadly threats” stating that anyone who disobeyed his directive should “write his/her will.”
The prosecution presented evidence that his broadcasts led to widespread economic paralysis in the south-east, with banks, schools, markets, and petrol stations remaining shut.
Count 3 – Proscribed Organisation Membership: Finally, the court found Kanu guilty of professing membership and leadership of IPOB, which is officially designated a proscribed organisation under Nigerian law.
