Police Confirm Arrest Of Suspected Child Kidnapper In Kwara, Warn Against Jungle Justice

Eyewitnesses had accused the man of attempting to kidnap a child, prompting an angry mob to descend on him.

Ilorin,  Kwara StateThe Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspected child kidnapper in Ilorin following a viral video showing the suspect being apprehended by members of the public.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the suspect—an adult male who claimed to be from Osun State—was arrested on Friday, 16th May 2025, at about 7:00 p.m.

He was taken into custody by a joint patrol team of police operatives and local vigilante members during a routine patrol.

Eyewitnesses had accused the man of attempting to kidnap a child, prompting an angry mob to descend on him.

However, police operatives quickly intervened to prevent an act of jungle justice.

“The suspect is currently in custody as investigations continue to determine the truth behind the allegations and uncover any possible accomplices,” the statement read.

“We are also awaiting further details from the complainant(s), who are yet to report to the Command Headquarters.”

The police warned against the dangers of mob justice, stressing that such actions are illegal and could obstruct proper investigation or lead to wrongful punishment.

“We urge the public to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station rather than take the law into their own hands,” the statement added.
