BREAKING: Court Of Appeal Sacks Kano Governor ‘Abba Yusuf’
Yusuf rejected the tribunal’s decision, deeming it “unfair” and a “miscarriage of justice
Abuja, Nigeria- The Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Friday, upheld the earlier ruling by the State Election Petitions Tribunal, which had on September 20, 2023, nullified the election of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State.
The panel of Justices at the apex court, led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, deliberated on the case extensively before reaching the decision to dismiss Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). The court declared Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election in Kano State.
The Tribunal invalidated 165,663 votes for Yusuf, who ran with the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), citing the absence of signatures or stamps from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The governor’s vote count was subsequently lowered to 853,939, while his All Progressives Congress (APC) competitor, Nasir Ganuwa, retained 890,705 votes.
Yusuf rejected the tribunal’s decision, deeming it “unfair” and a “miscarriage of justice,” and subsequently proceeded to the appeal court for further legal action.
In court, Wole Olanipekun, SAN, representing Yusuf, requested the setting aside of the tribunal’s judgment.
